The Basics: Dental Erosion Prevention

Posted .

Are you familiar with the devastating effects that dental erosion can cause to your mouth? Dental erosion is a condition in which your tooth enamel is slowly worn away by harmful acids that may be present. Typically, these acids are produced by plaque buildup. Oftentimes, it means that your oral hygiene may be slacking, and the development of bacteria and debris is beginning to put your teeth and gums at risk.

To help wash away plaque, always have effective cleaning routines in place. This could include brushing and flossing on a daily basis. Typically, you should be brushing and flossing daily as well. If you have issues or concerns with your oral health care treatment, you will need to reassess aspects of your oral hygiene and determine what you can do to help clean out your mouth.

Because your diet can have such a negative effect on your oral health, it may be a good idea to look at your diet to determine which foods and unhealthy substances need to be removed. Typically, you need to limit your sugars and carbs. This is because these products are known to be converted into harmful acids in your mouth by any plaque that may be present.

Apart from fixing your diet, you also want to make sure that you’re producing enough saliva. Saliva is a naturally occurring substance in your mouth that can help neutralize harmful acids and lower your risk for dental erosion. To help produce additional saliva, try chewing sugarless gum after meals.
