We all want our children’s smiles to be healthy. It is important to remember that a healthy smile doesn’t just depend on how we clean it, rather, health starts with what we feed it! Here are some kid approved, tooth-healthy foods to help your child maintain a healthy smile for life.

Dairy: Dairy products, such as tasty string cheese or low-sugar yogurt, are packed with calcium and phosphorous. These are necessary nutrients for oral health, as they strengthen and support tooth enamel. They are also excellent low-sugar snacks for kids!

Orange Juice with Calcium: Did you know that frozen orange juice concentrate fortified with calcium contains 1514 mg of calcium per cup? That is an entire day’s worth of calcium in just one glass! Be careful with orange juice, as it has a lot of natural sugars and acids. Try giving your child plain water to drink afterward to help clean their mouth, and give them the OJ with a meal to help neutralize the acids.

Beans: Many beans contain almost half your daily requirement of calcium in just one cup! Whip them up into a veggie dip for extra kid-friendly eating. Raw vegetables promote saliva production, which is your child’s first defense against cavities.

Fruit: Fruit is a great way to add natural sweetness to a child’s diet! Fruits contain fiber, which helps balance out the sugars they contain. Crunchy fruits, like apples or pears, are especially helpful to teeth, as they help scrape away plaque and food debris from teeth. They are like nature’s toothbrushes!
