A Consistent Oral Hygiene Routine Is Critical for Maintaining Good Oral Health

Posted .

The American Dental Association recognizes that a consistent and effective daily oral hygiene routine is one of the important key factors to maintaining good oral health. Here at Grant R Young DDS, our dentist, Dr. Grant R Young, offers these key insights for you to help you make the most out of your daily oral hygiene routine.

The first factor is the quality of the oral hygiene products you use. You should only purchase products that have earned the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance.

You should brush and floss your teeth twice each day to remove plaque and food particles before they can harden into tartar. When brushing your teeth each day, the ADA recommends that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush and abrasive toothpaste. A toothpaste with added fluoride also helps keep your tooth enamel strong. This can mitigate tooth sensitivity and prevent cavities.

When you are done brushing, you should floss between your teeth and along the gumline. Flossing is the most effective way to remove plaque and trapped food particles from between the teeth to prevent them from hardening into tartar. Waxed dental floss can help you work the floss easily into hard-to-reach places. The waxy coating makes it easier to slip the floss into tight spaces without accidentally forcing it into your gums.

Your six-month dental checkup and cleaning with your dentist, Dr. Grant R Young, will remove any lingering traces of hardened tartar. It will also monitor your mouth for tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer.
